What a dirty coil actually does to your fridge
The condenser coil dumps heat out of the fridge into your kitchen. Cover it with a gray blanket of lint and that heat has nowhere to go. So the compressor runs longer. Then it runs almost all the time. Heat is what kills compressors and start components, and it builds slowly, over years, not days. Meanwhile the freezer starts losing ground on hot afternoons. Out here on hollow roads, we also see grit and hay dust from open windows and gravel driveways. Add a shedding dog and a coil can choke inside a single summer. None of this shows up as a warning light. It just quietly shortens the life of the machine.
The five-minute habit
Unplug the fridge. That's step one, every time. Pull the toe grille off the bottom front — most snap off by hand or lift straight up. Look under there with a flashlight. If you see gray fuzz, you found it. Use a vacuum with a crevice tool and a soft brush, or a coil brush from the hardware store. Go gentle. The fins bend easy and bent fins hold dirt worse than clean ones. Some fridges have the coil on the back instead. Same deal: unplug, pull the fridge out, vacuum the black grid. Don't remove any back panel or touch wiring. Grille off, vacuum, grille on, plug in. Done.
How often, honestly
Twice a year covers most homes. We like spring and fall, tied to something you already do, like changing furnace filters. If you have dogs or cats that shed, make it every three months. Same if you're on a gravel or dirt lane, or you heat with wood — wood ash is fine and it travels. Farmhouse kitchens with a lot of foot traffic and floor registers load up faster too. Also vacuum the coil any time you pull the fridge out for other reasons. While you're back there, glance at the drain pan and make sure the fridge sits with a few inches of air behind it. Crowding it undoes your work.
Signs prevention is already past due
A few things tell us the coil went too long. The compressor never seems to shut off, and the side or bottom of the cabinet feels hot to the hand. Freezer holds but the fresh food side runs warm. Ice cream soft, milk sour early. You hear a click, a hum for a few seconds, then a click again — that's a compressor trying to start and giving up. Water pooling under the unit can mean a frozen or overflowing drain, which often travels with a heat problem. Cleaning the coil at that point may help a little, but the damage is usually electrical or mechanical by then. Call us and describe exactly what you hear.

Anything behind a panel is ours. Start relays and run capacitors hold a charge and can bite you after the plug is out. Sealed refrigerant lines take gauges and recovery equipment, and they're not a DIY repair at any skill level. Condenser fan motors, defrost heaters, and thermistors all sit behind covers for a reason. On older farmhouse wiring we also check the outlet itself — a loose receptacle or a shared circuit makes a healthy fridge act sick. We're independent and we work on all the major brands. Can I use compressed air instead of a vacuum?
You can, but do it outdoors or expect a dust cloud in your kitchen. Compressed air pushes lint deeper into the coil if you blow from the wrong side. A vacuum pulls it out. We prefer the vacuum.
My fridge doesn't have a grille on the bottom. Where's the coil?
Older and some current models put the condenser on the back as a black grid of tubing. Unplug it, pull the fridge forward, and vacuum that grid. No panels come off for either style.
Will cleaning the coil fix a fridge that's already warm?
Sometimes, if the coil was badly clogged and nothing has failed yet. Give it a full day to recover. Still warm after 24 hours? Something else is wrong and it needs looking at.
