What "not cooling" actually tells us
A fridge doesn't make cold. It moves heat out of the box and dumps it into your kitchen. So when the inside gets warm, one of three things happened: heat can't get out, cold air can't circulate, or the sealed system stopped moving refrigerant. Running but warm is very different from dead silent. Silent usually points at power, a control board, or a start component. Running but warm usually points at airflow or frost. Note which one you have before you call. It saves us both time on the phone.
Cause family one: airflow and dust
This is the cheap end, and out here it's common. Condenser coils under or behind the fridge collect dust, pet hair, and the fine road grit that comes with a gravel driveway. Coated coils can't shed heat. Inside, vents get blocked by a casserole dish shoved against the back wall or a freezer packed wall to wall. Cold air has to move from the freezer into the fresh food section through a small duct. Block that duct and the freezer stays fine while the fridge climbs. Check both before anything else.
Cause family two: defrost and frost buildup
Behind the freezer's back wall sits the evaporator coil. It frosts up in normal use, then a heater melts the frost off on a schedule. When that defrost cycle quits, the frost turns into a solid ice block. Air can't pass through ice, so the fresh food side warms up first. The tell is a freezer that still feels cold, a fridge that doesn't, and a fan that sounds louder or grinds. Sometimes water pools under the crisper drawers instead, because the drain line froze shut.
Cause family three: controls, door seals, and power
A door gasket that's torn or gummy lets humid room air pour in all day. Run your hand along the seal for gaps. Older farmhouse kitchens add another wrinkle: a fridge sharing a tired circuit with a microwave, or plugged into an outlet with worn wiring. Low or intermittent voltage makes compressors struggle. Thermostats and control boards fail too, and so do the small fans. If the compressor never starts and never clicks, stop there and call us. Start components and capacitors hold a charge and aren't a homeowner job.
Safe checks you can do right now, and what we do next
Safe: read a thermometer in a glass of water on the middle shelf. Confirm the temperature dial wasn't bumped. Vacuum the visible grille at the base. Pull the fridge out a few inches for air clearance. Check that the door closes fully and the seal grips a dollar bill. Listen for the compressor. Don't remove interior back panels, don't touch refrigerant lines, don't open the control housing. When we arrive, we measure actual voltage at the outlet, check the evaporator temperature, test the defrost circuit, and read pressures on the sealed system. That tells us whether it's a fan or a compressor, not a guess.

My freezer is still cold but the fridge is warm. Is that a different problem?
Usually yes, and it's a good sign. That pattern points at airflow between the two compartments — a blocked vent, a failed circulation fan, or an iced evaporator. The sealed system is probably fine.
Should I unplug it for a day to melt the ice?
A long defrost can restore cooling for a while, and it confirms ice was the problem. It won't fix why the defrost cycle quit. Expect it to come back in a few weeks.
How long should I keep food in a fridge that isn't cooling?
Move perishables to a cooler once the interior passes about 40 degrees. Keep the door shut otherwise. A closed freezer holds safe temperatures much longer than the fresh food side does.
