How long should a new ice maker take to fill the bin?
Give it about twenty-four hours from a cold start. Most units make a batch every ninety minutes or so. If the bin is still nearly empty after a full day, something in the fill or harvest cycle is failing.
Does our hard water really wreck ice makers?
It shortens their life, yes. Mineral scale builds inside the inlet valve and the fill tube until flow drops off. You get small, cloudy cubes first. A softener and a fresh filter schedule buy you years.
Can you fix the ice maker without replacing the whole fridge?
Usually. The ice maker is a module with its own valve, heater, and control. We replace the failed piece when parts are available for that model. Full assembly swaps are common too, and far cheaper than a new refrigerator.
Why does the ice smell bad even after I dump the bin?
Old ice absorbs odors from food, especially when the maker cycles slowly. Replace the water filter, wash the bin with mild soap, and toss the first two batches. If it returns, the filter housing or supply line may be the source.
My water line froze once. Will it keep happening?
It will if the line runs through an unheated crawlspace or an exterior wall. We thaw it, then look at rerouting or insulating the run. Older farmhouses around here often have plumbing in places nobody would choose today.
