Safe things to check first
Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.
- 1Feel the door seal all the way around for gaps, and see if a dollar-thin piece of paper slides out easily when the door is shut.
- 2Pull the freezer out and look at the coil underneath or behind it — thick dust and pet hair choke off cooling.
- 3Check that the plug is on a live outlet, not a tripped GFCI or an old switched receptacle common in farmhouse kitchens.
- 4Make sure nothing is blocking the interior vents, since a packed-full freezer can stop air from circulating past the evaporator.

Freezer Repair — quick answers
My freezer is frosting over every few weeks. Is that normal?
No. Heavy repeat frost usually means the automatic defrost cycle isn't running or the door is letting humid air in. We test the heater, thermostat, and board, and we look hard at the gasket and hinge alignment.
Should I fix a chest freezer or replace it?
Depends on what failed. A relay, thermostat, or lid gasket is straightforward work on a unit that may run for years yet. A dead compressor in an older cabinet is a harder conversation. We tell you which one you have.
How cold should a home freezer actually be?
Zero degrees Fahrenheit is the target for long storage. A few degrees warmer still freezes food but shortens how long it keeps well. If yours sits above ten and can't recover, something in the cooling or defrost side needs attention.
Do you work on garage and basement freezers?
Yes. Those are common around here. Unheated spaces cause their own problems — some units won't cycle properly when the room drops cold, and damp basements rust cabinets and short out wiring. We factor the location into the diagnosis.
Can hard water affect a freezer?
It affects the ice maker most. Mineral scale builds in the fill tube and mold, causing hollow cubes, jams, and slow production. Filtration helps. We clean or replace what's scaled and check the water valve while we're in there.
What should I do with the food while I wait?
Keep the door shut. A full freezer holds temperature for a day or so unopened. Move what you can to a neighbor's or a cooler with dry ice if it's already softening, then call us so we can get you on the schedule.
